The Annual Check-in Every Podcaster Needs
The Essential Yearly Check-In for Sustainable Podcasting Success
Instead of just tracking metrics or thinking about rebranding, I’ll walk you through an intentional practice to honestly assess whether your podcast still excites you, serves its purpose, and is worth your time and energy.
Whether you’re feeling stuck in routine or ready to reinvigorate your vision, this conversation is about making deliberate choices, not just running on autopilot. Stay tuned as we explore how the most successful long-run podcasters keep their “why” alive season after season.

Here are 3 key takeaways:
- Recommitment > Continuation: Continuing your podcast by default isn’t enough—actively choose to recommit with a clear sense of purpose (Brett Johnson at 01:54).
- Be Honest About the Exchange: Take stock of what your podcast has given you and what it’s cost—time, energy, professional growth, business impact. Is it still worth it? (Brett Johnson at 02:35).
- Clarity is the Long Game: The podcasters who build lasting, meaningful shows aren’t always the most polished—but they return to their “why” season after season. That’s what keeps them going, year after year (Brett Johnson at 03:58).

FAQ's
What is a podcast recommitment review and why is it important?
A podcast recommitment review is a deliberate, annual practice where you reflect on whether your original reason for podcasting still feels true and valuable. It matters because it helps ensure you keep podcasting on purpose rather than out of routine, supporting clarity and long-term sustainability.
How can I use Brett Johnson's framework to evaluate my podcast's why each year?
To use Brett Johnson's framework, set a date each year to read your current podcast why statement aloud, honestly assess what your podcast has given and cost you, and consider if you would start the show again knowing what you know now. This process clarifies your motivations, reveals whether your why still resonates, and guides intentional decisions about your show's future.
What benefits come from regularly revisiting the purpose behind your podcast?
Regularly revisiting your podcast's purpose strengthens your clarity and commitment, making it easier to sustain your show for the long term. By doing so, you ensure your podcast continues to align with your goals, helps avoid burnout, and empowers you to evolve your show intentionally.

I research with AI. I draft the first draft with it. This episode is its own example. AI gathered the platform coverage and produced the drafts. I set the argument, directed the corrections through several rounds. I rewrote the piece until I said what I think, in the way I say it. When any scanner reads the transcript, it will find the machine’s fingerprints on the sentences and mine on the personal experiences. Both readings are accurate. Consider this the blackline for the document you have just read and podcast episode you have just heard.
Podcasting is a MARATHON, not a sprint. Be patient, take action, and apply yourself.

Recommitting to your podcast why the Annual check in every
Brett Johnson:Podcaster needs.
Brett Johnson:Welcome back to the Podcast why. I'm Brett Johnson, My Podcast guy, your trusted
Brett Johnson:friend in podcasting. The show is here to help you reconnect with the real
Brett Johnson:why behind your podcast so you can keep showing up with clarity
Brett Johnson:and confidence. This is Season five, the final episode.
Brett Johnson:Episode seven. This season has been about sustaining your why over the long
Brett Johnson:game, and it's been built for the podcaster who's been at it for a while
Brett Johnson:and needs to stay in it. It covers the evolution of the why, the
Brett Johnson:comparison trap, natural podcasting seasons, guest strategy,
Brett Johnson:using listener feedback as a strategic mirror, navigating life
Brett Johnson:interruptions, and closing with the Recommitment Review
Brett Johnson:Framework. This episode, Episode seven we're going to talk about that
Brett Johnson:Review framework to recommitment of the podcast. Here's
Brett Johnson:a practice I recommend to to every podcaster I work with and
Brett Johnson:the one that I come back to myself every single year. Set a date on
Brett Johnson:the calendar Once a year doesn't have to be the end of the year. It
Brett Johnson:can be at any point in time, even if it's your natural end of your
Brett Johnson:season or of the podcast when it began to sit down with
Brett Johnson:your podcast and do a full recommitment review. Not an audit
Brett Johnson:of your metrics, not a rebrand, a recommitment. A
Brett Johnson:deliberate, intentional act of asking yourself whether you still believe
Brett Johnson:in this work, whether your podcast why still holds, and
Brett Johnson:whether you want to keep it going on purpose rather than out of habit.
Brett Johnson:This might sound simple, even obvious, but I've worked with
Brett Johnson:podcasters who have been publishing for three, four, five years and have never
Brett Johnson:once done this. They're still going out of momentum, out of routine, out
Brett Johnson:of not knowing how to stop. And when I ask them directly,
Brett Johnson:why are you still doing this podcast? They have to think about it for a
Brett Johnson:long time. That pause is telling. Recommitting isn't the same as
Brett Johnson:just continuing. Recommitting is choosing again with full
Brett Johnson:awareness of what it costs and what it gives you to keep showing
Brett Johnson:up. Here's the framework I use with clients and that I'd
Brett Johnson:encourage you to borrow. Start by reading your current podcast why Statement
Brett Johnson:out loud. Does it still feel true? Does it still
Brett Johnson:describe why you're doing this? Does it still excite you,
Brett Johnson:even little? If yes, great. If not, that's
Brett Johnson:important information. And we're back to the work we covered in episode one of
Brett Johnson:this season. A link to that episode is going to be in the show Notes
Brett Johnson:Next look at what the podcast has given you and cost you over the past
Brett Johnson:year. Be honest on both sides. What has it contributed
Brett Johnson:to your business, your audience, your sense of purpose, your professional identity?
Brett Johnson:What has it cost in time, energy, money and
Brett Johnson:opportunity? Is the exchange still worth it? Then
Brett Johnson:ask the forward looking question. If you were starting this podcast today,
Brett Johnson:knowing everything you now know, would you start it?
Brett Johnson:And if yes, would you start it the same way? Or would you build it
Brett Johnson:differently? I've worked with podcasters who went through this exercise and came
Brett Johnson:out the other side with renewed energy and a sharper
Brett Johnson:vision. I've worked with others who realized, honestly and without
Brett Johnson:guilt, that they had finished what they had started and it was time to close
Brett Johnson:the chapter with intention. Both outcomes are valid.
Brett Johnson:Both are better than continuing by default. This
Brett Johnson:is the final episode of season five and I want to close it with the
Brett Johnson:way I try to close every coaching conversation I have with podcasters who are in
Brett Johnson:it for the long haul. Podcasting is not a sprint.
Brett Johnson:It never was. The podcasters I've watched build something
Brett Johnson:truly meaningful over years. Shows that shape their business,
Brett Johnson:their reputation, and their relationships. They all had
Brett Johnson:one thing in common. Not the best equipment, not the biggest guest
Brett Johnson:list, not the most polished production. They had clarity about their
Brett Johnson:podcast, why and why they were doing it. They had clarity
Brett Johnson:about why they were doing it. And they came back to that clarity
Brett Johnson:over and over, through every season of ease and every
Brett Johnson:season of difficulty. That's the long game and it's the only game
Brett Johnson:worth playing. Your podcast why is not a nice to
Brett Johnson:have. It's the spine of everything, the thing that holds the
Brett Johnson:show upright when everything else gets hard. Protect it,
Brett Johnson:revisit it. Let it grow with you. You can book a clarity call with me.
Brett Johnson:Just head over to My Podcast guy online and look for the Book a Clarity
Brett Johnson:Call link. We'll map your podcast to your business and your business to
Brett Johnson:your podcast so it all feels coherent. This has been
Brett Johnson:season five of the podcast. Why? Thanks for listening. I'm Brett Johnson, my
Brett Johnson:podcast guy and we'll talk to you next season.
