After more than a decade working behind the scenes with everyone from solo creators to big business podcasts, I’ve learned that the secret to a sustainable show isn’t perfect gear, viral moments, or chasing algorithms. It’s about knowing your “why.”
I share what you can expect from each episode: short, focused, and practical ideas to help you reconnect with your purpose, clarify the direction of your show, and make podcasting feel more meaningful and manageable. Every episode includes real stories from my years of podcast consulting and simple reflection questions so you can take action right away.

You didn't start your podcast just to hear your own voice or chase another algorithm. But somewhere along the way, the episodes got harder to make, the ideas stopped flowing, and the doubts started getting louder. What should I talk about next? Does this show even matter? Why can't I stay consistent? If you've ever felt stuck, inconsistent, or quietly guilty about your podcast and the why Podcast is for you. I'm Brett Johnson, my podcast guy. For over 10 years I've been behind the scenes with podcasters from solo creators to business shows, observing what truly keeps a show going year after year. It's not about better podcast gear. It's not about the perfect format. It's not a viral moment.
Brett Johnson [:The podcasters who keep going know their why. Your why is the engine compass the North Star of your show. It's the reason you sit down at the mic when nobody's asking. It's the promise you're making to a specific listener. It's what keeps you recording when the metrics don't look like you hoped. This show is here to help you rediscover the real reason your podcast exists beyond the downloads, sponsors and shoulds. Turn that why into clear decisions about topics, form, format, guests and seasons. Make consistency easier by aligning your show with what actually fuels you.
Brett Johnson [:Navigate stuck seasons, breaks and pivots without shame or self Trash talk. Each episode's short, focused and practical, usually five to seven minutes in length, built in three parts. The first part is the big idea, a specific why concept tied to the real struggles of existing podcasters. Then we go into a story. An example, a behind the scenes principle based story for my 10 years of consulting. No hype, no name dropping, just patterns I've seen again and again. And then the takeaway or your action. One or two simple reflection questions or moves you can make before the next episode, including a recurring today's why question to guide your thinking.
Brett Johnson [:This isn't a grow your downloads overnight show. It's a calm, encouraging, strategic reset for podcasters who already have a show and and want it to feel aligned, sustainable and worth the effort. Again, you're going to like the why Podcast if you've launched and you're wrestling with inconsistency, doubt, or direction. You're tired of surface level tips and want honest behind the scenes real talk. You want short episodes that respect your time but still offer something meaningful to think about and act on. You're willing to look deeper than just I need to try harder and actually clarify why your show should exist in this season of your life. You don't have to figure this out alone. Think of this podcast like a quick, focused conversation with a trusted friend who's seen lots of shows, lots of patterns, and a lot of quiet quitting, and wants you to have a more intentional story.
Brett Johnson [:If you're ready to stop white knuckling your podcast and start building it around a why that you can actually carry on, hit play. On the first episode of season one, your mic, your listener, and your future self are going to thank you.
